“Impossible!”

The first time I saw this movie was in 2017 during my high school English class. I didn’t think anything of it other than “omg that’s Whitney Houston.” However, after a second rewatch- I have a LOT more to say.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is a whimsical retelling of the classic fairytale. The title character is an optimistic dreamer who is treated cruelly by her stepmother and stepsisters. However, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, she’s able to change her life for the better and finds a love only achievable in fairytales.

One thing I absolutely LOVE about this version of Cinderella is that the prince and our title character meet long before the ball. He even gets her name!! And the two have a (somewhat) normal conversation/duet!!

Prince Christopher (Charming) gets a good amount of screen time that allows us to get to know him as his own person. He wants to choose his love and not be rushed into marriage. I respect that. ALSO WHOOPI GOLDBERG PLAYS HIS MOTHER?? THE QUEEN?? I don’t know HOW I forgot that. This movie has such iconic casting.

That being said, the movie plays out like a more outwardly feminist version of the classic Cinderella story. The title character is much more outspoken about modern ideals of love and self worth, making her a great role model for the target audience.

I enjoyed the soundtrack, sets, costumes, and acting. There are some surprisingly funny moments! I highly recommend this film if you’re looking for a fun, forward thinking version of the beloved tale.
