“The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work.”
The Princess and the Frog is Disney’s 49th animated feature film inspired by E.D. Baker’s The Frog Princess, which was inspired by The Frog Prince by the Brothers Grimm.
Set in New Orleans during the Roaring Twenties, the movie stars a hardworking waitress named Tiana. She works every day and night, saving money to open a restaurant of her own. Despite her hard work, due to the racial/gender inequality of the time, Tiana gets screwed over last minute and is left without her dream building.
Meanwhile, Prince Naveen is visiting to party his nonexistent worries away… until his parents cut him off. In his time of need, Naveen and his servant Lawrence get involved with the Shadow Man.
The night of Charlotte’s (Tiana’s best friend) ball, Naveen and Tiana meet… but not in the way you’d expect. Naveen has been turned into a frog by Dr. Facilier and thinks he needs the kiss of a princess to turn back into his princely self. Tiana reluctantly agrees, but unlike the story we all know, Tiana is also turned into a frog! 😰
The rest of the film focuses on Tiana and Naveen’s journey to become human again. The two realize they can learn a lot from each other and they even *gasp* fall in love!!
All the while Lawrence and the Shadow Man are hunting Naveen down and using Charlotte to get close to her wealthy father so they can kill him and steal his fortune.
First, I LOVE the soundtrack to this movie. So jazzy and upbeat! “Almost There” is such an empowering song and Tiana is a wonderful character to look up to. Also, the animation?? STUNNING. I wish Disney would make more 2D films.
The characters are great too. While Tiana and Naveen are on their journey, they meet a lot of memorable characters like Ray the firefly, Louis the alligator, and Mama Odie the voodoo priestess. ALSO TIANA’S MOM IS VOICED BY OPRAH?? Iconic. 💅
There’s supposed to be a Tiana series coming to Disney+ in the future and I can’t wait! She’s such a great princess. I’m excited to see her overcome the struggles of running a restaurant, managing her time between work/relationships, and of course… singing more songs! <3
